A Hikari RailStar passes non-stop through Higashi-Hiroshima Station as two 500-series trains wait. On the left is a 16 car train (on an out-of-service run), while on the right is an 8-car Kodama service.

After the withdrawal of the remaining 0-series Shinkansen on November 30th, a number of Kodama services will be taken over by 500-series Shinkansen displaced from Nozomi services as more N700-series trains are delivered. These Kodama services will be operated by 500-series trains shortened to 8 carriages (from the original 16).
