It is no longer possible to buy tickets directly to Miyajima (using the JR ferry) from any station. With the spin-off of the ferry operations into a subsidiary company, it is now necessary to buy a ticket to Miyajima-guchi Station, and then a separate ferry ticket.

Yes, it is. The ferry is to be spun off into a subsidiary company of JR West from April 1st, 2009, but even after this date Seishun 18-kippu tickets will continue to be valid.
